Flaming Gorge Fishing ReportPosted On: 2010-05-26 State: Utah Day(s) fished: May 25 Area on that water: Sheep Creek Bay Hours fished: 6-8 pm Weather Conditions: Sunny, breezy Air temp: 60 F I rate fishing as: Good Species caught: lake trout Notes: I was in Manila on business, with a very tight schedule, but managed to squeeze in 2 hours to fish. No boat, so I worked the shoreline at Sheep Creek Bay. From the boat ramp I hiked east toward the main lake, to a nice little cove.
From 6 to 7 pm action was dead slow. After the sun went down I started to see small bass in the rocks, and my hopes picked up. I was casting Rapalas along the shoreline and out into deep water in the cove. Put on a Husky Jerk in fire tiger and nailed 2 lake trout pups, one about 18 inches and the other about 22.
They were both fat and fought hard. Just pups, but fun to catch. Both hit out in deep water, not along the shoreline.
Talked to several other fishermen. Half said action was good, have said poor. The guys who did best we jigging with a small brown plastic grub-like thing, working it along the bottom at 30-40 feet. One guy had caught a 22-inch lake trout fishing worms from shore.
Didn't catch any of the smallmouth. Didn't target them, knowing water is still a little cold. In another 2 weeks, bass fishing will be very good at the Gorge.
Saw the snake as I climbed through rocks approaching to cove. Saw 2 more in the same area – all about 5 feet long. There were still stiff, moving slowly. Monday weather was cold and stormy. Tuesday was sunny and warming, so they crawled out onto the rocks to warm up.
