General Info on Fishing The Green River

Life Jackets

Every person must have and wear a life jacket. The life jacket must be worn at all times a fisher is on the water.

Extra oars or fins

Each craft must have an extra oar or set of fins in one is broken or lost. If the craft you are floating in requires two oars, you must take an extra one. If you are going to fin the boat you are required to take at least one extra fin (preferably a second set).

Plan on being checked at the launch ramp. If you don't meet these requirements, you won't be allowed to launch.

Last trip I forgot my extra oar and had to go up to the Flaming Gorge Recreation Services in Dutch John and rent an extra one. It only cost $4.00 but it wasted some valuable fishing time.

Avoid weekends

If possible avoid the river on weekends. Every parking lot will be full, the launch ramp will be a zoo and in the summer there will be raft after raft full of recreational floaters. If you want to have some solitude and the river mostly to yourself, float and fish during midweek. Just tell your boss you have an important meeting with PMD.

Shuttle Service

Flaming Gorge Lodge and Flaming Gorge Recreation Services both provide a shuttle service from the dam to Little Hole. It will cost you $25 but it is well worth it. Just fill out the forms, pay your $25 and leave an extra set of keys. When you come off the river at the end of the day your vehicle will be waiting for you.

Parking Fee

The Forest Service charges a $2.00 parking fee to park at the dam or at Little Hole. Make sure you pay for a parking pass or the ticket you will have stuck on your windshield when you finish your float will cost just about as much as the shuttle service did.

Parking passes are available at Flaming Gorge Lodge, the Visitor's Center (right at the dam) or at Flaming Gorge Recreation Services.

Equipment/Gear

You can rent rafts, buy flies, have a meal, hire a guide, buy a new fly rod or just get some good advice from:

Lodging

Flaming Gorge Lodge has 24 condominium units plus motel rooms in addition to a dining room and cafe, general store and gas station.

More information

The best book on the Green River was written by Larry Tullis. Tullis works for Anglers Inn in Sugarhouse if you would like to talk to him in person.

This book can be purchased from just about any fly shop or tackle shop in the west. Of course Angler's Inn carries it.

Guided Trips

If you have never fished the Green River before or if you are new to floating rivers or if you just want to pick the brain of an expert, you ought to hire a guide for your first trip. Guides don't come cheap but they are worth every penny when it comes to getting to know a river.

Most of the tackle stores or fly shops can set you up with a guide.
