The Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area will open for the 2002-2003 season on Dec. 14. Staff at the WMA, which is operated by the Division of Wildlife Resources, welcomes the public to participate in the excellent elk viewing opportunities that will be available there this winter. "As the temperatures drop and snow begins to accumulate, we should start seeing significant numbers of elk," says Chris Haller, Hardware Ranch manager.

The WMA's visitor center, restaurant and gift shop will be open starting Dec. 14 and sleigh rides to see the elk may be operating as well, depending on the snow depths. Cost for the sleigh rides is $5 for those ages 9 and older and $3 for those ages 4 to 8. Children 3 and younger ride for free. No reservations are needed. "Dress warmly and bring your camera to capture a memory of these elusive animals," Haller says.

Beginning Dec. 14, the WMA's facilities will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The facilities will be closed Dec. 25 for Christmas. The WMA will be open during its regular operating hours on Christmas Eve and New Years Day.

The WMA's restaurant serves a variety of meals and will once again feature a night sleigh ride/dinner combo. Reservations are required for the sleigh ride/dinner combo.

For more information on this unique opportunity, or to make reservations, call (435) 753-6168.

The WMA's visitor center provides great self guided educational displays and Division of Wildlife Resources personnel will be available beginning Dec. 14 to provide information and answers visitor's questions.

The Hardware Ranch WMA is 15 miles east of Hyrum, on State Route 101. Road signs direct visitors to this popular wildlife viewing area.
