Johnson Farm Dinosaur Walkway
(Posted 12-13-02)
A visitors’ center and science facility are being constructed to protect fossilized dinosaur tracks found at the Johnson farm along the Virgin River in St. George, which have proven to be scientifically significant and a popular visitor attraction.
Congress recently appropriated $500,000 for the city to purchase the 10-acre farm and develop the facilities. A climate-controlled shelter will protect slabs of sandstone that contain the tracks. Tracks have also been found in rock in adjacent areas; those slabs are being moved to the shelter area.
The walkway was discovered in early 2000. More than 150 tracks have now been identified and some 415,000 people have visited the site.
The visitors’ center is being constructed at 2200 Riverside Dr. From I-15, take Exit 10 (Washington/Middleton), and drive south on 3050 East (Pineview Drive) until it swings to the SW and becomes Riverside Drive.Call St. George Leisure Services, 1-435-634-5860, for more information, including hours of operation.
