Starvation's Hot For Smallmouth

Utah Fishing & Outdoors, Vol. 12, #3, Aug. 15, 1998

Whether you fish from a boat, float tube, pontoon boat or from the bank, it's time to head on over to Starvation Reservoir.

Don't fish for walleye, although the walleye fishing should be good and getting better as we head toward September. Don't fish for the big brown trout that swim the waters of Starvation. Though you might catch one just because you are there.

Now's the time to track down some great smallmouth bass fishing. You don't have to get fancy. You don't need to go out and spend a bunch of money on lures or fishing rods. Just grab the old spinning rod you already have. Check the line. If it is old, brittle or two light or heavy, recycle it and reel on some new mono. Six pound, thin diameter line should do the trick.

Buy a handful of three eighth ounce jig head and some singletail grubs. They are inexpensive and you are going to lose some so buy a bunch. Chartreuse, pearl, black, rootbeer and clear with sparkle are good colors.

Point your car or truck for Starvation Reservoir and don't forget to check out the State Park when you get there. It's one of the nicer ones in the state and except for holidays, it generally isn't full.

Now, start looking for structure. Rock piles, brush, dead trees, dropoffs, breaklines. You know, all those bass hang outs you read about in the bass fishing magazines. Ok, forget it. Just look for rocks down in the water from right next to the bank to 20 or 30 feet deep.

Start casting right into the bank. Let the jig sink until it's right on the bottom. Jig it either parallel to the shoreline or out into deeper water.

Be prepared for the bass to take the lure as the jig falls. Keep most of the slack out of your line so you can tell if a bass picks up the jig.

If the line moves sideways, stops going down or just pauses - set the hook. Sometimes you will catch a rock but usually you'll hook into one of the hardest fighting fish there is. Get out there and catch some bass!
