Early Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is starting! It is still early and so use extreme caution.

Huntington Reservoir, along Skyline Drive east of Fairview, is frozen (3-inches of ice near the dam) and is providing good action for tiger trout. Go for them using a lure tipped with bait.
A storm now over Utah should last through Wednesday. After that it will get very cold and that should firm up ice on small, high-elevation waters. Here are some likely bets for early ice fishing. Mountain roads may be in poor condition.

Scofield Reservoir may have safe ice on some bays this weekend. There will probably be unsafe ice or open water in other areas. The rainbows here like Powerbait. Also some cutts. Try an ice fly tipped with a mealworm.

Puffer Lake has safe ice. This small water is located high in the mountains east of Beaver. It usually offers good action for rainbows early in the season.

Woodruff and Birch Creek reservoirs should have safe ice. Standard rainbow action.

Whitney Reservoir, off Hwy 150 in the Uintas, is certainly frozen. There may be enough snow to get to it by snowmobile this weekend. That would be a fun ride and fishing should be good. Later in the season the ice will become so thick it would be difficult to fish.

Whitney is in a designated snowmobile play area. Most other Uinta Mountain lakes are not. Know where you can ride before heading into the wilderness.

It will probably be a couple more weeks before Strawberry and most other popular waters have safe ice. Be cautious and don't risk your life.

Fly fishing is still good on area streams, with brown trout spawning. Leave the spawners alone; Catch opportunist fish by working glo bugs or standard nymphs below spawning fish. Good choices include the Provo, Weber, Ogden, Green, Huntington and East Fork of the Sevier.

Bear Lake is fishing very well. It has open water and cold conditions. Troll or jig for nice cutthroat and lake trout. Go after the lake's unique whitefish by trolling or casting small spinners.

Good fishing.- Dave Webb
