Catch The Hybrids At Mill Meadows

Fish Lake Plateau map showing Mill Meadows.

Tiger.jpg (14048 bytes)Mill Meadows Reservoir will open to fishing on May 24 (the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend), and will offer a strange hodgepodge of hybrid trout. Rainbows and four other unique species are thought to be available in the reservoir. Two have never really been subject to fishing, and so there is no way to predict their habits and catchability. Some of the fish are quite strange looking. Fishing there should be an interesting experience. It will be trial and error figuring out how to catch them, and when you catch one it may be difficult to figure out what species it is. Hybrids found in the reservoir are described below:

Brownbow- A cross between a male brown and a female rainbow. Tiger trout- A cross between a male brown, and a female brook trout. Splake- A cross between a female lake trout and a male brook trout.

Brake- A cross between a female lake trout and a male brown.

There will be no special regulations at the reservoir. We fear these exotic fish will quickly be cleaned out by enthusiastic fisherman, and so we encourage catch and release. Lets give these fish a chance-and give other anglers a chance to catch them.

What should you fish with? Flies, lures, baits, we don't know! Take an arsenal and keep trying until something works.

Splake are well established in several Utah waters and we know they readily take jigs tipped with bait (a crawler, piece of sucker meat, or a minnow). They can also be caught on flies and on bait alone.

Tiger Trout are aggressive and often hit spinners or flies.

Brownbows are thought to be somewhat similar to their rainbow parent, but apparently have cataracts and so they may have poor eyesight (they may even be blind). Odoriferous baits may be best for them.
