Rockport is a pretty little reservoir on the Weber River just off I-80 east of Park City. It usually offers good to very good fishing but is seldom crowded. In my opinion, it doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves.
We fished on June 18 and did well for nice rainbows. We did not measure the fish but the biggest probably was about 18 inches long, fat, and healthy. We caught fish trolling various lures. We started fishing at about 5:30 pm and started catching fish immediately; action stayed good until we quit just after sunset.
Rockport is fun because it offers several species. Rainbows are common but also hold big brown trout and a growing number of kokanee salmon. Smallmouth bass and perch are abundant along rocky shorelines.
Sonar showed good numbers of fish out in the middle of the reservoir at depths ranging from 30 to 80 feet. As the evening progressed the number of fish on the graph decreased as fish moved into shallow areas closer to shore.
We used kokanee techniques part of the time but did not connect on a salmon this time. Browns are hard to target. We’ve caught them occasionally near the bottom and also near the inlet. We did not try for them or for smallmouth this trip.
We saw only four other boats that evening. Several groups were shore fishing and I saw some catch fish.
The reservoir was full. Campgrounds and other facilities were opened and appeared to be in good shape but were mostly empty. We fished on a Tuesday evening. I suspect far more people would be there on a weekend.
Rockport is close enough to the Wasatch Front to offer a great afternoon/evening trip, and it has great facilities for those who want to stay overnight.
We had great fun and will be back.
