tyler lost creek rainbow

Lost Creek Reservoir is a pretty little water up Weber Canyon, in northern Utah. It offers rainbows, cutthroats, tiger trout, and now some kokanee. I've fished it a few times over the years and it has always been fun, albeit I've never had fast fishing here. It is close to the Ogden area and becoming increasingly popular for fishers, kayakers, and paddle boarders. Boats are restricted to wakeless speed, making it easier to fish and enjoy human-powered recreation.

Unusually hot temps during the past couple of weeks have brought on summer-like conditions a little ahead of schedule. We saw fish on the graph and managed to catch a few but not as many as we expected. The surface water temp was 68F and fish were mostly deep and not particularly aggressive. We caught 10-14 inch rainbows and cutts. DWR has also stocked tiger trout and kokanee in the reservoir and has established a slot limit to try to protect fish so they can grow bigger. Under that regulation, all trout 15-22 inches must be released. We should soon see positive results and this may become a more productive fishery.

The reservoir is a Utah State Park but right now it has limited facilities and services. There is a small, narrow boat ramp and docks are in the water. There is a nice camping area just below the dam and several spots where you can dive to the water's edge to shore fish, picnic, and play. As facilities are improved, this water will become more and more popular.

We launched at about 7:30 am and the air temp was 45 F. Nice, considering the sweltering temps found along the Wasatch Front. By noon the sun felt hot and we were slathering on sunscreen.

We had kids with us and it was fun getting them into fish without having to drive very far from their home.
