We had surprisingly good fishing for rainbow trout yesterday afternoon/evening at Echo Reservior. It was a beautiful, warm, spring day, partly cloudy, and we got rained on for a few minutes. The reservoir was full and launching was easy, with docks in the water.
The best action begain about an hour before sunset as we fished along the shoreline southeast of the marina. Trees line the bank and little fish were jumping completely out of the water. We stopped the boat and cast toward shore and had a hit on every cast. Every lure we tried caught fish. When we stopped, I had on a curly-tailed grub because I was working the rocks for early season bass. It caught rainbows.
People fishing nearby from shore were also enjoying good action. It would be easy to reach and fish the area from a tub or kayak.
I don't know how long fish will be concentrated in that spot. I suspect it will be a productive area until water temps warm and the fish move deeper.
Echo is fun because it offers a good mix of fish. We did not catch any smallmouth this trip but that action should pick up soon. We did catch a brown trout and could have caught a hundred rainbows, if we wanted to. The reservoir also offers yellow perch and some walleye.
It is a beautiful reservoir not far from the Wasatch Front. The state park there offers excellent campgrounds and facilities.
