We fished Deer Creek Reservoir 6-17-21 and enjoyed great action for nice rainbows running 12-17 inches. They were fat and healthy and fought hard.
We targeted rainbows on the upper end of the reservoir. My fish finder showed good numbers of fish in many areas, from near the surface to deep in the water column. We started about 7:30 am and had fish on almost immediately. The most productive lure of the day was a Lil Jakes, gold, with red spots. It worked well when trolled on a long line, so it ran just under the surface, and also when put down about 20 feet using a downrigger.
Action was hot near the surface until the sun got high in the sky and temperatures heated up. Then the best action was down 10-20 feet.
There were quite a few boats on the water and several were working the rocky shorelines, apparently targeting smallmouth. They seemed to be doing well.
We are seeing record hot temps this year and trout will move deeper as summer progresses. During the heat of summer I do best during the first hours of light in the morning. After that, you will need downriggers or some other mechanism to deep deep. During the hottest days, fishers do well trolling a worm behind pop gear.
