NOTES:
8-2-2010, Jared B reports: We tried to go to to McGath Lake this last week. We went up the 566 from Hell's Backbone Road and then turned right down 492. I think that was the road number. You cannot get to McGath from 566. It dead ends and starts a ATV trail head. Also, on the board at the trailhead it said that McGath Lake was not assessable from there and you needed to go back down the road and turn on to the 492 to get to McGath.
We went down 492 for about 2 miles. It was a terrible road. Rocks where in the road that if you are not very careful could knock out your oil pan. It was like that some of the way and then you have to cross a creek. You have to drive over a covert that the stream goes through. The only problem is it isn't berried in the ground all of the way and we just about got high centered. We were driving a 4X4 suburban, it doesn't have a lift but it is fairly high. And it was very muddy. From there we went down the road about 500 feet or so and decided to turn around. After that it is a very narrow road with a lot of rocks.
I would say if you decide to go to McGath Lake, walk in or take a 4X4 ATV. Very beutiful place. we talked to a local in Escalate and he said it is a good place with big fish, but only assessable with a ATV. And I agree.
