June 2026
I fished Mill Meadow in mid-June and had very good action, catching rainbows and wild browns. Most of the fish were in the 10-14 inch range — nothing special, but there are some nice-sized fish in this water if you put in the time.
A Rare Mix Of Species
Mill Meadow is located in central Utah, downstream from Fish Lake. Small browns are abundant in the Fremont River above the reservoir, and many of them migrate down into the lake, which is what makes the fishing here interesting. Beyond browns and rainbows, the reservoir also holds splake, tiger trout, wipers, and yellow perch. It's rare to find a water with that kind of diversity, and my fish finder showed a large number of fish holding in the reservoir.
Suckers are abundant too, and they've historically been a problem at Mill Meadow since they outcompete trout for food and habitat. Wipers were stocked specifically because they're effective predators on suckers, and the hope is they'll help keep those numbers in check over time.
Boat Ramp And Launch Access
A boat ramp allows small boats to launch through much of the season, though the water level can drop below the end of the ramp later in summer. When I visited, the ramp was still usable, but it was clear the water had been dropping steadily over the previous weeks.
Float tubes and personal pontoons can be hand-launched at many spots around the shoreline, so you're not dependent on the ramp if you're fishing from a smaller craft.
Drought And Dropping Water Levels
The water level may drop more than usual this year because of the ongoing drought. That's not all bad news, though — as the water drops, the fish become more concentrated, and the fishing can actually improve. Conditions are good right now, and I'd expect them to get very good as summer goes on.
Camping And Getting There
Road FR036, paved, runs along the east side of the reservoir, with several short dirt spurs dropping down to the water's edge. Dispersed camping is permitted along the east side, and travel trailers and RVs often set up near the northeast shoreline. Mill Meadow makes a solid base camp if you want to fish the reservoir and also explore the surrounding area.
Fly Fishing The Fremont River
If you're a fly fisher, don't overlook the Fremont River above the reservoir. It often provides good action for naturally reproducing brown trout, and it's a nice complement to a day spent working the lake.
