See our Tuweep photo gallery
Tuweep is a remote vista overlooking the Colorado River from the Grand Canyon North Rim backcountry. It provides spectacular views. In many areas the Grand Canyon is wide with walls that are sloped or stair stepped. Here the canyon is very narrow and the walls are sheer – almost vertical. It is a great spot for photographers, unique and very photogenic.
Sometimes called Toroweap, the vista is not the highest or most popular, and that is part of its charm. Its remote location and rugged access road insure it is never crowded. It can be accessed year-round (except during and immediately after storms). When roads are wet they may be impassable even with the best 4-wheel drive vehicle.
Access roads are decent (when dry) until you enter the national park. The last few miles are very rough and require high-clearance four-wheel drive.
Location: Arizona Strip south of St. George, Utah.
Latitude: 36.214738
Longitude: -113.057027
Elevation: 4546 ft
Approximately 3000 ft above the river
Approximately 100 miles SE from St George
Approximately 75 miles SW from Kanab
Approximately 142 miles from Grand Canyon North Rim viewpoint
Access is easiest, with the best roads, driving south on Road 109 (Mt Trumbull Loop Road) from Hwy 389 near Pipe Springs, and then 115 to the viewpoint. It took us 2.5 hours to drive this route, from Kanab to the viewpoint, on dry roads.
From St George, the most direct access is via Road 5, from near Colorado City, and then 115 to the viewpoint. Road 5 has deep sand in some spots.
You can also drive south from St George to the tiny community of Mt Trumbull and then around the mountain to Road 115. During winter, the road around Mt Trumbull may have snow, ice and/op mud.
All access roads are dirt, bumpy, very washboardy.
Once in Grand Canyon National Park, roads are not maintained and become very rough. The last few miles to the viewpoint requires high clearance four wheel drive.
The viewpoint is open from sunrise until 30 miles after sunset. There is a gate on the access road and it is closed at other times.
There is a primitive campground at the viewpoint. Advanced reservations are required.
