We wanted to camp in the red rock, somewhere near St George, where kids could climb on rocks right there at camp. Where kids could run and be rowdy without bothering other campers. We found such a place where the Oak Grove Road crosses the red rock, north of Silver Reef, north of the town of Leeds.
Snow Canyon has a beautiful campground set in the red rock. Red Cliffs Recreation Area also has campsites against climbable rocks. Sand Hollow has great camping in the sand. All are very popular and fill up fast, so it is difficult to find a site during the spring and fall seasons. At all through campers have neighbors and so kids need to be somewhat restrained.
There are several nice, primitive campsites along the Oak Grove Road and the first four are set in red rock. They offer fire pits but no other facilities. No water or restrooms and no reservations – first come first serve.
All of the sites are along an improved gravel road with easy access, except Site No 2. It offers the best rocks for climbing. It reach it you must make a short drive up a steep hill where high clearance is needed. Other sites are in the trees. A small stream runs nearby.
The area is scenic and Site No 2 is particularly so. There are sandstone spires and caves and cliffs. It is a natural wonderland ideal for kids. We brought a port a-potty with us and enjoyed a wonderful camping trip.
We did a day trip to Sand Mountain, off Babylon Road, SE of Leeds. Most of our photos are from that area. If offers huge sand dunes, great red rock and an impressive small arch. There is also a primitive campground that is very nice, located right against towering red rock. The area is in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and a free permit is required for camping. See more information on Sand Cove camping.
