A large number of elk usually spend the winter at Hardware Ranch, where Utah Division of Wildlife Resources workers feed them to keep the animals from migrating down into Cache Valley and damaging farmland.
Human visitors to the ranch are invited to view the elk from horse-drawn sleighs. The sleighs don’t usually spook the wild elk so visitors can get close enough for memorable views. People often come away with great photos.
This season rides are offered Fri, Sat and Sun, Dec 1, 2023, through Feb 11, 2024, from 10 am through 4:30 pm. Cost is $4 per kid ages 4-8 and $10 for ages 9 and up. Ages 3 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the information center. Advanced reservations are not needed or accepted. Just show up, buy tickets and get on the next available sleigh.
The ranch offers a wildlife information center, restrooms and some options for food and drinks.
The ranch is open year-round. Winter temps are cold. If you come for the sleigh rides, dress in warm layers and wear good boots.
During summer the ranch offers camping and hiking trails. Many people fish streams on ranch property (Utah fishing license required for those 12 and up).
Hardware Ranch is located in Blacksmith Fork Canyon about 15 miles east of Hyrum, near Logan in northern Utah. The access road is paved. It is plowed during winter but can be icy/snowy during and immediately after storms. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has plenty of fuel. Always carry emergency gear.
