Lions Mouth Cave is an interesting pictograph site in the mountains west of Cedar City, UT. The site is unique, with red and yellow figures painted onto the back of an alcove.
We’ve heard that some of the colors seen today are not original. Apparently, a local person wanted to brighten up the fading figures and so he “improved” them. We have not been able to find any scientific information as to age or culture. If anyone reading this has more information, please let us know.
The trailhead is found along the good Pinto Road, about 1.2 miles south of Hwy 56. There is no sign marking the trailhead, but it is easy to find. The alcove is in a rock formation that is prominent and can be seen from the road. If you drive south past the trailhead, you can see the actual alcove.
A good, easy trail leads around the rock formation and up to the alcove. The round trip distance is only about a half mile. The trail ascends a gentle slope and then you have to scramble up the rocks to get into the alcove.
Some people think the shape of the alcove resembles a lion’s mouth, hence the name.
Parowan Gap, west of the town of Parowan, is the most famous rock art site in this area. It is fascinating – a destination worth a trip. If you are in the area, Lions Mouth is worth a few hours.
