There are interesting rock art figures on boulders along the road as you travel south from Gunlock Reservoir, and even more if you hike to explore the area.
My favorite panel in this area is on the ridge above the highway. See my Mile Marker 3 rock art report.
The Naming Cave (Birthing Cave) is a fascinating rock art site west of Gunlock.
I also found interesting rock art on top a small hill along the Santa Clara River below Gunlock Dam. Note, in the first row of photos below the images are carved into the rock and are covered by patina. That is a clue they are older. The images in the bottom row look like they were lightly pecked onto the rock surface and they are not covered by as much patina. That indicates they are newer and the artist did not take as much time or care when creating the artwork.
