Navajo craftsmen (and women) from around the region bring rugs and craft items to sell at auction in Crownpoint, NM. (Crownpoint is located south of Farmington, about 25 miles north of Thoreau.) The auction is held once a month (usually the second Friday) at the community's elementary school.
This provides the opportunity for people to buy directly from native craftsmen, usually at prices far lower than similar items in shops in the tourist areas.
