kanab dinosaur tracks 2There is a nice dinosaur trackway on top a ridge just north of Kanab, Utah. To view it you need to hike up the ridge, about 0.7 miles one way, but the trail is steep and requires some scrambling over rocks. Kids will enjoy viewing the tracks but youngsters will require help navigating the trail.

The trailhead is at the Utah Port of Entry on Hyw 89, just north of Kanab. The official directions suggest you park at the port-a-potty and follow the trail that leads southeast. Multiple hiker-made trails are visible here and it can be difficult identifing the official route. Just follow a trail SE along the bottom of the canyon until the trail turns south and climbs partway up the ridge.

The trail then swings back west and follows a contour around the ridge, passing above Hyw 89. The trail gains altitude as it swings south and follows the ridge above Hog Canyon. It then climbs to the top of the ridge, where the tracks are located.

The tracks have been outlined with chalk and are easy to see. They are quite distinctive.

We enjoyed spending about 1.5 hour hiking and viewing the tracks. Give yourself plenty of time because it would be hazardous descending the trail in the dark.
