I’ve driven past the trailhead countless times thinking someday I’ll hike Zebra. Well, this spring we decided to do it and it was more fun than expected. It’s a great short, beautiful slot worth a half-day’s time.
One section in the slot has striped walls (hence the name). That section is shot but very beautiful. Most of the canyon is very narrow. We had to walk sideways and in some spots had to wedge through tight spots. There is usually water in the canyon. When we hiked the water was cold and came up to our thighs. These obstacles make the hike moderately challenging and add to the fun.
Nearby, Tunnel Slot is also fun and worth doing.
These slots are located east of Hole In The Rock Road, south of Escalante, in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. You pass it as you drive to more famous attractions like Peekaboo/Spooky Gulch, Coyote Gulch, and Hole In The Rock itself.
The trailhead is easy to find even though it is not signed. The trail is obvious and easy to follow. It is relatively flat getting to the mouth of the slot. Round trip hiking distance is about five miles if you do Zebra along and a little more if you include Tunnel.
This entire area is scenic and the hike to the trailhead is enjoyable.
The hike to the trailhead is in full sun and is very hot during summer. But the hike is short enough to do during the morning hours before the heat of day sets in. April/May and October are prime months. You can certainly hike it during winter if you are prepared for cold wading.
In my opinion, Zebra is not a destination hike. Others in the area are better and are primary attractions. But Zebra is great if you are in the area and want one more challenge. The striped walls are impressive.
