Twenty years ago I hiked the Knob and remember it is a great, moderately challenging hike with outstanding scenery. In my notes I say it compares with the best hikes in our national parks. Maybe better because there are no fees or permits required and no crowds.

I’m revisiting some of my favorites and I went to the Knob last week to see if anything has changed. Yes, some things have:

 1. My body. What seemed moderate with fun scrambling now seems like a strenuous hike with challenging scrambling.

 2. My mind. Memories I though were clear turned out to be fuzzy and some were unreliable.

 3. My transportation. I can now drive my FJ Cruiser right to the base of the Knob and avoid several miles of hiking.

What hasn’t changed is the beauty of the area. The scenery does rival the best in our national parks. And there are still no crowds. We did not see any other people during the entire day we spent hiking. I love getting off the beaten path.

AllTrails.com has good route info for this hike.

Twenty years ago I hiked the Devils Canyon slot and popped out at at the base of The Knob. That is a good option for strong hikers. See that trip report.

My third photo is an AI enhanced scan of a slide I took on that trip 20 years ago.
