The Needles District of Canyonlands National Park is a spectacular area of wide open spaces, unique rock formations, massive buttes, deep canyons and extremely rugged jeep roads. Highway 211 provides access to the park and provides wonderful viewpoints that can be accessed via family car.

Off of the paved highway, roads become rugged. High clearance 4X4 vehicles can drive some roads to amazing viewpoints. Some roads can only be driven in vehicles designed for extreme off road adventure. Elephant Hill is one of the most famous such roads and it provides a great challenge for people not afraid to break axles.

The BLM-managed Canyon Rims Recreation Area surrounds the park and also provides amazing recreational opportunities.

There are 26 campsites inside the park and 3 group areas. Some sites can be reserved during spring and fall. At other times and for other sites, camping is available on a first come basis.

There are several BLM campgrounds in the surrounding area. We stayed at the Hamburger Rocks campground Memorial Day weekend 2020 and had a great time. Weather was perfect and it was easy to find a vacant site. We loved how kids could climb on the rocks right at camp. They had great fun. We also drove down the Lock Hart Road and played in the Indian Creek waterfall. It was great fun.

Earlier in the spring and in the fall, sites in the BLM campgrounds may fill up on weekends.

Newspaper Rock is located along Hwy 211 in this area.

Nearby, there is a beautiful waterfall on Indian Creek that runs during the spring after winters with good snowpack.
