We camped at Ponderosa Gove in early October, 2021, and had a great time. This BLM campground was very nice and the weather was perfect. We used it as base camp and made day trips to nearby attractions.

I knew going in that the campground did not offer water and had pit toilets. The restrooms were actually nicer than expected and the campground was very pleasant, with large ponderosa pine trees, nice sandy tent sites, tables and fire pits. There is a loop for RVs with nice, large sites. The cost per night was only $10.

The best part is it’s location convenient to Kanab and East Zion attractions.

  • Coral Pink Sand Dunes Utah State Park – 5 miles
  • Kanab City – 15 miles
  • Best Friends Animal Sanctuary – 11.5 miles
  • Nation National Park East Entrance – 30 miles
  • St George City – 67 miles
  • Grand Canyon North Rim – 95 miles

Campground location:

  • Latitude: 37.088806 deg
  • Longitude: -112.671800

Our kids particularly enjoyed playing on the sand dune adjacent to the campground (across the road to the south).

There is a nice developed campground at Coral Pink Sand Dunes. The park caters to off road vehicles and the campground is often crowded. By contrast, Ponderosa Gove was not filled to capacity. It was quiet and peaceful, with great dark night skies.

Zion Park offers nice developed campgrounds but they are near the west entrance, not in the Kanab area.

There is a BLM camping area, Sand Springs, south of Ponderosa Grove. It is marked on Google Maps. It is just and ope area where people can camp – no charge and facilities at all. Access is via a dirt road that is washboardy in spots and has deep sand in other areas. High clearance is recommended.

There are many commercial RV parks that offer camping in and around Kanab. //www.google.com/maps/search/kanab+utah+Campground/@37.0179868,-112.720291,11z" target="_blank">See this map.
