kanarra fallsWe (Dave Webb family) hiked on Aug 25, 2023, and conditions were excellent.

The Kanarra Falls hike is one of our favorite family-friendly slot canyon hikes. It is a beautiful canyon that is fun to hike. Between the beauty of the canyon and the excitement of hiking in a stream and climbing waterfalls, it is satisfying for hikers of most ages and experience levels. Our group included a couple of 9-year-olds, and they needed help in a few spots, but they managed the hike very well and couldn't stop talking about the fun.

The hike is located just south of Cedar City. The trailhead is in the town of Kanarraville and the hike is on the edge of the Zion Park Kolob Canyon area. It is about 4 miles round trip. The total elevation gain is only 700 ft, but there are considerable ups and downs. Moderate scrambling is needed in a couple of spots. There are numerous stream crossings and you do need to hike in the water in some spots. The water is usually only ankle deep but there are a few deeper holes. If you stay on the trail the hike is pretty easy, but most people can't resist the lure of the water and so they wade deeper and scramble more than is necessary.

Almost half of the hike follows a dirt road above the water where there is considerable sun exposure. You will want a hat and you need to bring plenty of water. Hiking conditions remain good through September, as temperatures cool, and become quite chilly in October. People start hiking again in April but the water and air are cold at that time. If you have insulated pants and shoes, it can be very enjoyable. May and June bring runoff but hiking is possible most days.

Flash floods are possible and can be a real danger, particularly during late summer. Watch the weather and check current conditions before hiking.

Advanced reservations are required and they limit the number of people who can hike the canyon per day. The hike has become very popular but it is still relatively easy to get permits if you plan a few weeks in advance.
